"We Won't Underrate other teams". ---Sunday Olise

Super Eagles Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh, has expressed his opinion on the 2018 FIFA World Cup preliminary draw held in St. Petersburg, Russia on Saturday, saying the three-time African Champions won’t underrate any of the teams.
Drawn bye from the first round of the African qualifiers, Nigeria begins her campaign for a place at the 2018 finals in Russia in November 2015, away to the winner of the Djibouti vs Swaziland first round playoff.
While appealing for caution, the Super Eagles handler told kickoff.com that there are a number of reasons for him to be happy.
“Of course, I am happy with the draw,” Oliseh stated.
“We are not playing the first round, which is a preliminary round and which we knew before the draw. We will also be playing the first leg of the second round away which means we have an advantage of playing the more crucial return leg at home, in front of our fans.”
The coach also warned against complacency, revealing that there are a lot of dangerous teams around that could hurt if taken for granted.
Oliseh said: “Djibouti and Swaziland need to be given the respect that they deserve and either of them that we face in the second round will not be underrated. We respect every team and we will battle anyone that emerges with our full strength.
“With the draw now concluded,we can safely say that the race to Russia has officially started. I am optimistic we will run this race very well. We will give it our very best and pray it will be good enough to get us one of the five slots available for Africa.”

'Enugun Ready to Swear-in New Commissioners' ---ENSG

As the Enugu State House of Assembly, screened  and confirmed twenty-four commissioner nominees presented to them by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on yesterday, July 14, 2015, the Governor of the state, has confirmed his readiness to swear in the new commissioners tomorrow, July 16, 2015.
Shortly after the screening session, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Edward Ubosi, said their confirmation was based on their performance on the floor of the House when they faced barrage of questions during the screening by members of the House.
“In view of the performance of the nominees, the House do approve their appointment,” Hon. Ubosi posited.
Hon. Ubosi subsequently directed the clerk of the House to communicate ‘his Excellency accordingly.’
Earlier before their confirmation, leader of the House, Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu expressed the hope that when confirmed the nominees would “do us proud.”
Because of the calibre of the commissioner nominees, the house members merely asked them to take a bow while some of them were asked question.
Those who were asked to take a bow and leave without questions during the screening exercise include Amb. Fidel Ayogu, Hon. Chijoke Edoga, Hon. Peace Nnaji and Hon. Ogbonna Asogwa.
Others who did not go through the rigors of screening include the former commissioners, Rita Mba, Mike Ene the immediate past commissioner for Agriculture and Barr. Charles Egumgbe, pioneer chairman of Enugu PDP and former commissioner for Commerce and Industry.

"Why I Killed my banker wife" --Obinna Okonkwo

For Mrs. Uchenna Faith Okonkwo (nee Amara), a banker with Access Bank Plc, University of Nigeria, Nsukka branch, Sunday May 24, 2015 came like any other worship day. She had already prepared for the working week the previous day and so was ready to attend a church service and come home to take a full day rest.
A member of the Anglican Church, she attended the early morning service at the Church situated at  Enugu Road, Nsukka and shortly after the service, Uchenna decided to go straight to the market to pick some vegetables with which to cook lunch for her family.
Unknown to her that she had few minutes live on planet earth, she quickly got home at about 9:45am and found her husband of six months in the house alone. Her Niece was also said to have  left for church and so when Uchenna came into the house, she greeted her husband, took the condiments into the kitchen and went straight into her room to change her clothes.
After removing her jewelries, she pulled down her skirt, unzipped and removed the blouse and threw them on her room shutters. With her wrapper on the bed, she also unbuttoned her brassier and while she was removing it, she was attacked. A heavy flower vase was used to hit her at the back of her head. The attack did not give her any opportunity to shout. Her assailant immediately rushed her, grabbed her neck,  squeezed it and eventually snuffed life out of her. In a few seconds, the young lady who just came into her house was lifeless.
The attacker hurriedly and briskly moved into another room, grabbed a brand new rope, formed it into a noose, tied it around the neck of the lifeless Uche, improvised a ladder, took the other end of the rope to the ceiling fan and began to pull in order to lift the dead body. The aim of the attacker was to make the whole episode look as if the lady committed suicide.
The attacker did his best to lift and make the body hang and dangle from the ceiling fan but could not due to her weight. And in utter desperation, he decided to allow the naked lifeless body of Uchenna  kneel on her knees. In a bid to conceal the crime, her assailant quickly dressed up, locked the house and left. As he was going, he was announcing that he was on his way to church. The idea here was to get away from the scene of the crime and remain out until someone else comes in to meet the dead body.
After some hours, the assailant felt that someone must have seen the dead body and started going back to the house. When he came into the compound, other tenants had already come back from service and so some of them who were discussing outside their respective flat balconies exchanged pleasantries with him while he made straight to the top most flat.
According to one of the tenants who pleaded to remain anonymous, “shortly after the man went upstairs, he started screaming. He called us to come upstairs and see what he was seeing. Because I had known the kind of character he is, I was insisting that he tells me what the problem was but he screamed the more. When he refused to stop, myself and other tenants decided to go up because they lived at the topmost floor.
“My brother, when we got there, we were all shocked at what we saw. The shock didn't allow me to stay there any longer. I quickly moved downstairs to alert other persons in my house. The whole compound was thrown into confusion. As we were all panicking, the husband of the lady, Mr. Obinna Okonkwo put a call to his priest in their church who also arrived immediately at the scene of the incident. At that point, we were all convinced that the lady banker committed suicide”.
The Starlite gathered that while the people were all confused, the husband, Mr. Okonkwo was suggesting that the body of his wife be untied so she could be taken to the mortuary but there was the other opinion that the parents of the lady be contacted to put them in the know that their daughter had committed suicide. Perhaps that was where the trouble started for Obinna  because the lady’s father sensed that there must be something wrong somewhere and asked that the body be allowed to remain as it was until he comes. The man said there was no reason for his daughter to go to the extreme case of committing suicide and immediately put a call to a medical doctor within Nsukka to proceed to the scene.
When the Doctor arrived, The Starlite was told that he noticed that the lady had some bruises on her face and that blood gushed out of the wound. Curiously, the Doctor discovered that the lady was in a different position when the injury was inflicted on her because according to him, he was miffed that rather than blood flowing down the face of the lady, the blood flowed backwards into her hair. The Doctor also observed that the wound at the back of her neck could not have been from the noose that was tied around her neck.
It was further observed that for a case of suicide to be complete, the person must be dangling on the rope adding that at the period of the commission of suicide, the person was supposed to have  either excreted or urinated on herself and the tongue dangling out of her mouth but none of these sufficed in the case at hand.
These indicators which were pointed out by the medical personnel began to wear out the initial idea of suicide and began to wear the colour of culpable homicide. Though the investigation conducted by the Doctor sounded very convincing, there were still doubts in the minds of those around.
Shortly after the Doctor made his observation, a team of police men from Nsukka Urban Police Division arrived the scene, conducted their own investigation and doubted if actually Uchenna committed suicide. They asked the husband some preliminary questions among which was where he worshiped. He told the police that he worshiped at his Church at Enugu road. But earlier in his interaction with the Priest of the church, Obinna said he went to worship in one of the churches at Opi community in Nsukka local Government area.
Obinna had earlier told the Priest that he went to church and came back to see the corpse of his wife. But the Priest asked if he actually worshiped in his Church stressing that he (the Priest) did not see Obinna in the church. Obinna said he worshiped at Opi and that he went for a thanksgiving service of one of his friends.
With this conflicting reports, the police then asked Obinna to take them to the church where he worshiped at Opi but he was not willing to do so. The suspicion that he knew about the death of the wife began to grow stronger and stronger until the Priest took him aside where Obinna then confided in him that he was actually responsible for the death of his wife.
At that point, Obinna then painted graphically how he killed his wife and wanted to make it look as if she committed suicide.
Pressed further by the police on why he had to kill his wife whom he married barely six months ago, Obinna at first said that when his wife came back from church, she wanted to force him to take some drugs that will increase his sperm count but that he refused and thereafter, there was a fight that led to her death.
In another statement he said he was quarreling with his wife because the lady refused to make him her next of kin after they got married  adding that he had severally asked her to change her name to Mrs. Okonkwo instead of her maiden name but that she refused to take the instruction.
In her own statement, the girl who lived with them in the same house and a Niece to the deceased and who pleaded not to have her name in print said that that morning before her sister was killed that Obinna was unnecessarily mounting pressure on her to prepare for church service quickly and leave the house. She stressed that all the while she lived with them, she had never been in good terms with Obinna.
“He had always been very hostile to me. When I greet him, he chooses when to reply and when not to. So, that fateful day, after my sister left for church, I was surprised when he came into the room and told me to get ready and leave the house for church so that I will not be late. Actually, I did and did not come back early unlike before otherwise I would have been the first person to see the corpse of my sister… (broke down in tears).
“All the while I lived with them, they were always quarreling and sometimes I told my sister that brother Obinna hated her but she would not believe me. She would always ask me to shut up”.
The Starlite gathered that Obinna who sells cosmetics at the Ogige market Nsukka and Uchenna who was then at the Enugu road branch of the Access bank Plc met  sometimes in June 2014 and as they became friends, Obinna proposed to marry her. Inspite of other suitors who were asking her hand in marriage, The Starlite gathered that she chose to marry Obinna against the wish of a segment of her family.
When all the hurdles were cleared, Obinna who hails from Omor in Ayamelum Local Government area of Anambra State carried out the traditional marriage rites at the lady's Enugwu Abo town in Anambra state. After the traditional marriage, it was gathered that Obinna decided to relocate to his wife's self-contain accommodation near Alu Udele axis of Nsukka metropolis but not comfortable with the development, the wife requested that they look for another accommodation and by January this year, they found accommodation at the Umuezebi village along Orba road Nsukka where she was eventually murdered.
In the meantime, the remains of the lady had been buried in her parents' home town, Enugwu Abo, Anambra State while Obinna had been charged to court and subsequently remanded in prison custody.

Missing N800m Worth of Shares: Heads May Roll again in UNN

The administration of Professor Bartho Okolo as the 13th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) may have ended but the ripple effects of the alleged humongous rot, financial indiscipline, official sleaze and bare-faced fraud that characterized that administration have refused to die down.
The Starlite has it on good authority that very soon, many heads will begin to roll if the news that the past administration fraudulently sold the shares of the University worth over N.8billion is anything to go by.
The Starlite gathered that the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba in his quest to know more of the status of the investments of the University at the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) discovered that the immediate past regime had already sold off the shares belonging to the University without due authorization.
The Starlite also gathered that the Vice Chancellor was even more miffed when it was discovered that there was no financial record of the university where the fund accruing from the sale of the shares was reflected.
As at the time of filing this report, The Starlite gathered that all those who were in charge at the finance department of the institution are having sleepless nights over the illegal deal. It was further gathered that the University administration has instructed the Bursar of the school to do a memo to the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) to update the university on what happened to the shares.

Naked Girls Invade Nsukka Town

In not too distant past, the sleepy town of Nsukka was known mainly for vibrant academic exercises due to the existence of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Those who are not practically involved in teaching and learning are either doing one form of business or the other.
At the end of every day, few people cluster around few relaxation centres to unwind. In these joints, fresh fish pepper-soup, roasted fish, nkwobi, ishi ewu among other delicacies are often served. These delicacies are served with chilled drinks to customers who consumed them very fast in order not to keep late nights. In deed, night-life was almost zero in the University town especially when stories made the rounds that related cult clashes resulted in killing of many young men.
Those days, security was the main challenge facing the residents who at the end of the day made haste to get to their houses before  sun set.
Today, the game has changed. Hotels are springing up here and there and so there has become stiff competition among the owners. Many other hotels around town are either already completed or at one stage of completion or the other. As the hotels were springing up, so many other drinking joints going by the name, gardens, began to spring up too. The development no doubt comes with its attendant ups and downs.
However, these hospitality industry players just like any other business enterprise are faced with one major challenge;  power supply. For a hotel that has at least 30 rooms, it requires nothing less than three pieces of power generating sets that are within the range of 100kva each. Each of these generators gulp not less than one hundred litres of diesel daily. When multiplied by the current price of the product, it will translate to a huge sum that cannot be sustained by the revenue the hotel generates.
Therefore, in order to make both ends meet, operators resort to doing one thing or the other to attract customers to the joints or hotels. The idea here is that when they have people around, then the chances of selling large quantities of drinks become high. In order words, the operators of these hotels make more money through the sale of liquor than lodging and accommodation.
Before now, the major strategy which the operators apply to attract attention of customers was the installation of big LCD televisions showing English Premiership League matches as well as the European Champions League. Football enthusiasts are often seen in these hotels and joints when major teams and clubs are engaged in matches but today, the game has changed. Operators now look elsewhere to attract the attention of these customers because so many are beginning to acquire their own Satellite Dishes and televisions.
The in thing today is the hiring of young beautiful ladies who come on stage, strip themselves naked and dance lewdly to some tunes.
Speaking to our roving reporter, an operator of one of these gardens who pleaded anonymity said: “We are operating under stiff competition. We run our gardens with generators and if you see how much we spend on diesel, you will pity us. We can't under this present circumstance pay our workers let alone make profit. Due to the mess we found ourselves, we were forced to apply other means to break even and that is the reason why we employ the services of these ladies. They come on their own and apply to dance naked in public. When they come on stage, we usually witness a boom in sales. In a night, we can comfortably sell over a hundred cartons of assorted drinks. We kill more fish and prepare more ishi ewu and out of these, we make little profit to keep us moving.
When asked to comment on the moral aspect of what he is doing, the man who did not want his name in print said he did not force the ladies to come and dance naked on the stage. “It is their profession and they are paid for their services.
As for whether his joint was not corrupting the youths, he said his garden was well fenced and so there would not be any thoroughfare for those below the age of 18. “It is purely for adults and we ensure that you are aware of where you are going. The venue is strictly not just an all comer's affair”.
Asked to express how he will feel if as a man he found his daughter in a stage like that, he said God would never allow his daughter to degenerate to the extent of going to clubs to dance naked.
Also speaking to The Starlite, the proprietor of Bar Royal center at Odenigbo, Nsukka, Mr. Eze Damian said he does not have the intention to engage such ladies to perform in his bar stressing that those who were in the habit of promoting the business of strip clubs were free under the sun to do so stressing that there was no law in our law books where such thing is classified as against the law.
“In as much as I would not want to apply such in my joint, I do not have to condemn those who think they would make more profit through that. This is a free world and whatever you do, you will account for it either here on earth or thereafter. For those who go to patronize the joints and hotels where ladies dance naked, it is also their choice. I do not have the capacity to condemn anyone. I don't also pry into other people's business. I try to focus on what I do and that is all”. Mr. Eze D. O said.
In the meantime, very many men of God who spoke to The Starlite on the development condemned it and called on government to look into it with the aim of coming up with legislation that would protect the moral values the people of Nsukka worldwide are known for adding that these vices came as a result of urbanization. Though most of the Priests said they were not aware that such level of immorality are going on in Nsukka, they said they would meet their colleagues in other denominations to push for the proscription of venues where ladies are allowed to dance naked.
“It is painful to the ears to hear that the stories associated with big cities like Lagos, Abuja and Owerri are already here under our nose. It is really sad and we shall work to make sure that the excesses of these hotel and garden operators are curbed. In those places where people operate strip clubs, it is not just open to the general public. The operators try to shield little children from having access to the venue but here, we are throwing our gates open to everybody to come in. I am not saying that the idea is partially good but to let little children who do not have the mental strength to reject what they don't like is highly criminal and should be condemned in strongest terms.
“Now that you have aroused the consciousness, I will collaborate with other men of God to fight this satanic scourge that is coming to destroy our youth”.
